Zhang Huan is best known for the controversial performance art that he staged in Beijing during the early 1990s, much of which focused on physical endurance. Since immigrating to New York, his work has explored cross-cultural perspectives, and his most recent large-scale sculptures and installations, created since he returned to live in China, draw on Chinese historical sources as inspiration. In Zhang Huan: Altered states, noted experts in contemporary art discuss each phase of his fascinating career in Beijing, New York, and Shanghai, and the artist shares his own perspective on his art and his life in art.
