The poetic elegance and spiritual intent of Cai Guo-Qiangís explosive performances are sometimes lost in the bombast associated with his artwork as public spectacle. The Light Cycle was planned for New York City to celebrate the 150 th birthday of Central Park. The drawings in this catalogue are the permanent documents that remain after the ephemeral public explosion was over. They hold the two-dimensional imprint ot the fiery schema that usually precede Caiís public, and unpredictable, performance. They are, and of themselves, works of art. They are made, like the performances, with explosive material, but more directly controlled by the artistís hand.
