Dancing for the Gods is an interactive educational DVD-ROM intended to introduce a new global audience to Bharatanatyam, India's best-known and arguably best-loved form of classical dance.(designed for Ages 10-18)
The program is designed both for self-study and for use in the classroom. A supporting websitewww.dancingforthegods.com offers lesson plans to help teachers-both movement specialists and non-specialists- to create exciting movement-based classroom activities for students K-12.
The artist behind Dancing for the Gods is Preeti Vasudevan, a noted Bharatanatyam performer and choregrapher from Chennai,India, now based in New York City. The author's innovative approach exploits the educational potential of on-line media-including video, animation and interactivity. Vasudevan's approach applies contemporary methodologies of movement analysis (e.g.Laban) to this ancient art-form. This allows users - especially those with some familiarity with western forms - to access the dance more easily.
At all times throughout the program, learners have access ot on-demand video sequences of outstanding performances, with expert commentary from some of the leading teachers and practitioners in the field. The program is notable for a high level of interactivity: there are sectgions where learners can choreograph movement sequences, and a webcam feature where learners can recored their movements and compare their performance to a "master" demonstration.
Dancing for the God aims to challenge both learner and educator, providing experience - based anayltic tools for
a deeper observation and appreciation of diverse cultural expressions.
Instructional software is compatible for both
