In Japan, juggling games—otedama—became popular in the Nara and Heian periods (7th–11th centuries) and remained so well into the 20th century, typically taught by grandmothers to their grandchildren. Though the advent of television meant these games were largely forgotten, these otedama—both the game and the traditional beanbag toys they were played with—are enjoying a renaissance. This book describes the sport and several basic otedama games and techniques, and is illustrated with dozens of examples of these beautiful little sacks, made in hundreds of variations to resemble fruits, folk figures, and cartoon characters.
